Operations

Sierra Bauxita Dominicana is a growing company with its head office in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic.  Our primary operations are based in Pedernales, close to the mine and Port of Cabo Rojo.  Our mine manager lives in Pedernales and has been involved with the mining and ship loading operations for over 40 years.

Mining

In Pedernales, bauxite is located at the surface and is extracted using open pit mining techniques.  Once an ore body is defined, the bauxite is mined using large excavators, piling up the ore in large stockpiles.  Selective mining techniques are employed to avoid the large stone pillars (believed to be pillars of underground caverns).  The bauxite is loaded into haul trucks and transported to a stockpile area where the ore is sampled and placed on the stockpile.  The samples are analyzed prior to shipment.

Shipping

Once a ship is nominated for loading, SBD begins to transport the bauxite from the stockpile areas to the dock for loading.  The ship loading system was built specifically for Bauxite and has loaded over 30 million tons.  Trucks dump directly into hoppers that deposit onto the loading conveyor and onto the ship.  SBD can load between 6,000 and 8,000 tons per day.  Modifications to the hoppers were completed in 2007, which will increase load rates to 10,000 tons per day.
